I thought I knew what interactive theatre was. Boy, was I ever wrong! There is nothing quite like “Death By Chocolate”. It is the most interactive, the most challenging, the most shocking and one of the coolest pieces of theatre I’ve ever done. I had done interactive improvisiational theatre before, but “Death By Chocolate” is completely in a league of its own. Playing the role of “Jack”, a character so different to me in every way possible (morally, spiritually, intelectually, etc…), was extremely challenging but also extremely rewarding. As most of the roles I’ve played in my time have been fairly non-threatening ones, having most of the audience wanting me dead did take some adjustment, but as every actor knows, bastards are always the most fun to play. The cast I worked with are all phenominal actors and Vanessa B. Baylen is a true genius. I would consider myself extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with WhoDunnit Events again.
‘Death By Chocolate’ was, for me, a trial-by-fire in improvisational acting. Before the season started I was terrified about facing an audience who was waiting to interrogate me. But the director prepared us well, and armed with my detailed character work I found that I really enjoyed the performances. Talk about “being in the moment”… I found that I was talking, crying, hurting, making friends, and having arguments as my character, much more than I ever have in a scripted show. Most actors are always seeking that elusive “moment”… this is a different, challenging and amazing way to find it.
Being a part of ‘Ambition’ was a wonderful experience. Everyone involved was committed, talented and great fun, and to be involved in such an amazingly innovative and intelligent theatrical experience was a privilege that taught me much about strong, researched improvisational acting. I’d jump at the chance to do it again!
Working on the wonderful interactive performance of ‘Death By Chocolate’ was an amazing experience in so many ways as the audience was right there next to you asking you questions that were in no way scripted. It was challenging and draining and THE BEST FUN. It was so real for everyone. The audience was shaping the course of events during the evening as the actors acted, reacted and followed their characters personalities throughout the evening. People were often so convinced by the reality of everything that they thought that they had upset the actors or that the actors were really aggressive etc. This was a credit to us as we were cast in characters that were quite different from our own personalities. And then there’s the chocolate! These are just a few reasons why I would recommend you to become involved with, perform in or attend one of Vanessa’s shows If you ever get a chance.
